The pit in my stomach grew to gargantuan status and I was surprised I still managed to walk and talk at the same time. We found an empty bench a few yards away. Good, because I didn’t want to lose sight of Mike.

I sat as still as possible under Selene’s direct, bordering-on-hostile gaze. Wanting to turn away and bang my head against the nearest hard surface. I glanced over to her cameraman, but his face was neutral, stuck behind the lens.

As if an interview wasn’t bad enough, I still wore my clothes from the game, while Selene was dressed in an immaculate white dress that clung to her curves and brought out the beauty of her full-blooded Fae features. Not a single black hair was out of place on her head.

Well, talk about a skewed balance of power. She was the princess and I was the dirt underneath the wheels of her carriage.

Selene cleared her throat to draw my attention. “Tell me about the first game,” she prompted. “Tell me how you felt when you discovered you were alone in the jungle.”

Don’t squirm. Don’t give her what she wants. “I’m not sure what you mean. Every student was alone in the jungle. Doing their best to find their way out,” I said with a forced noncommittal shrug.

She wanted to corner me and use the element of surprise? I’d show her I wasn’t the stupid failure everyone at Elite thought I was.

“Yes, but not every student here was handpicked by the king to attend the academy. You were.” Selene tilted her head to the side to peer down her nose at me. “And yet you didn’t finish the game. You were one of ten who did not make it to the temple before time ran out. I want your take on the experience.”

The way she spoke, the way she made mental notes on my smallest movement…it was clear Selene knew something was up with me. Something different. I almost felt at this point she shadowed my every move, trying to uncover my secrets.

Maybe she was. Maybe she wanted me to be the story of her career because her extra senses told her I didn’t belong in this world.

Lane had warned me to expect to give up all my biggest secrets in this competition. I hadn’t thought it would be this soon.

And I hadn’t expected it would come in the form of a beautiful Fae woman.

I told her what she wanted to know, my impressions of the first few hours of the competition. Selene prodded me into giving more than I wanted and a few times I had to rein myself back in before I said anything she would take the wrong way.

I wasn’t sure how, but I knew it was a possibility.

“You said you fell through the quicksand? How terrifying,” Selene pushed. Her features softened but I wasn’t convinced. It was purely for the camera, and I barely bit back the nasty things I wanted to say to her. She didn’t seem the least bit concerned.
